From a background rich in literature and the history of arts and architecture—as well as psychoanalysis, spiritism and magic—Ulla von Brandenburg explores the shaping of our social constructs with borrowings from theatrical codes and mechanisms, together with esoteric rituals and popular ceremonies. For her exhibition at the Palais de Tokyo she has conceived a total, constantly evolving project inspired by the theatre, its imaginary realm and its conventions. With ritual as her starting point, she invites the public to experience an immersive reinterpretation of the themes, forms and motifs—including movement, the stage, colour, music and textiles—that fuel her oeuvre.

This catalogue takes a political view of international contemporary creation seen from the Gulf region, where wars and diplomatic tensions have constantly determined the history of the early 21st century. It features two essays by the curators of the exhibition (Abdellah Karroum and Fabien Danesi), widely illustrated notices on the work of the 34 artists presented, as well as short statements from the artists and other invited contributors (Hamid Dabashi, Ala Younis and Abdallah Zikra) in response to the title of the exhibition “Our World Is Burning.”

The issue 30 of the magazine PALAIS is published on the occasion of the exhibition “Future, Former, Fugitive” presented at Palais de Tokyo from 16 October 2019 to 5 January 2020. This exhibition devoted to a French scene is based on an open view of belonging to a land and it escapes from the effects of a tabula rasa dictating that one generation eclipses another. It unites a good forty artists born between the 1930s and the 1990s, but who all live and work in and within their era.

PALAIS magazine is devoting its issue #29 to the exhibition City Prince/sses, presented from 21 June to 8 September 2019. Artists, fashion designers, filmmakers, musicians, DJs, tattoo artists, experimenters: about fifty creators coming from Dhaka, Lagos, Manila, Mexico City and Tehran are investing the Palais de Tokyo which has become an imaginary city, multiple and complex, open, messy, thundering and creative.
