Beauty of Fear and Fetish & Figure

With Kenneth Anger, Ulla von Brandenburg, Isabelle Cornaro, Ursula Mayer, Michael Robinson, Agnieszka Polska, and an episode of The Twilight Zone.

Beauty of fear
French photographer Raphael Neal will present a selection of videos and film excerpts addressing the theme of fear. The works presented have had a notable influence on the artist’s practice and aesthetics, which can be found in his series of cinematographically inspired photographs “Bates Productions” (2001-2011) or in his recent mystical series “De qui aurais-je crainte ?” (2008-2011).

The screening will not relate to horror films, but rather to the mise-en-scène of the uncanny in cinema and television. From sequences taken from “Gaslight” (Georges Cukor, 1944) or from “I Walked with a Zombie” (Jacques Tourneur, 1943) through the “Twilight Zone” or “Les Documents Interdits” (Jean-Teddy Filippe, 1989).

Fetish&Figure
Fetish & Figure brings together six films and videos by artists and filmmakers that address both the fetishisation of objects and the exclusive relation between the representation of objects and the body. Exploring the theme of “tableau vivant”, this program challenges the presence of the human body that disintegrates, allowing objects to come to life on screen as the camera captures them. The proposed works share a common approach of feminine iconography constructed around sophisticated accessorizes —perfume bottles, enchanting jewelry and shimmering pieces of clothing —while questioning images of voluptuousness and consumption and, finally, reflecting on human solitude, existential melancholy and physical disappearance.

The program will feature works by Kenneth Anger, Ulla von Brandenburg, Isabelle Cornaro, Ursula Mayer, Michael Robinson, Agnieszka Polska, and an episode of The Twilight Zone.
