Magazine PALAIS #04

For its fourth issue, PALAIS / has invited the artist Ugo Rondinone to create a special issue in connection with the exhibition “The Third Mind”. A gigantic cut-up created by the artist from 350 works by the artists in the exhibition and illustrated with 30 different covers, each copy of the magazine is a unique artist’s book, thanks to an original random production method. A collector’s edition!
Editorial by Marc-Olivier Wahler
With “The Third Mind”, Ugo Rondinone offers us a unique journey. An MRI of his influences, inclinations and obsessions, this exhibition is constructed like a wander through a brain in perpetual activity and dives into the source of the artist’s references and discoveries. For the first time, the artist’s talent for constructing systems of correspondences is put at the service not of his own work, but of the works of other artists. The systems of correspondence activated and the artists and works chosen make ‘The Third Mind’ an exhibition that no curator or art historian could ever imagine.
For this occasion, Ugo Rondinone is creating a special issue of PALAIS / magazine. In homage to The Third Mind – a cult book conceived by William S. Burroughs and Brion Gysin according to the cut-up method – he proceeds to cut up and remix the contemporary artistic landscape to let a new meaning emerge. Composed from the works of thirty-one artists, this gigantic cut-up in images constitutes a unique artist’s book, created by a third mind, the fruit of Ugo Rondinone’s meeting and his choices.
