Wearing a black roll-neck sweater and tights, Marie Karlberg (b. 1985) interrogates the structures of power at play in the art market. Enclosed in a Plexiglas box whose dimensions match those of the human body, the artist questions the interaction between the commercial expectations faced by young artists and the careers which result. As artists are obliged to pay ever greater attention to the ‘business’ dimensions of their practice, the performance 1 Hour of Limited Movement plays on the contrast between a constrained presence and the exhibition of one’s existence.
